Years ago, I recognized my kinship with all living beings, and I made up my mind that I was not one bit better than the meanest on earth. I said then, and I say now, that while there is a lower class, I am in it, and while there is a criminal element, I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free.Eugene V. Debs
The Peace and Freedom Party of Ventura County (formerly the Socialist Party of Ventura County) strives to motivate radical action among nationally oppressed and working class people toward a revolutionary socialist movement and build a Ventura County left that is open and inclusive. We believe that all progressive victories in the United States have been achieved through the democratic struggles of ordinary people, rather than bestowed upon us by political elites. We organize for the rights of the working class and against the capitalist-driven manifestations of fascism, racism, sexism, and hetero-sexism through:
- Coalition work
- Participation in broader movements
- Effective communication with local communities
- Positive relationship-building with other progressive organizations

The Peace and Freedom Party of Ventura County embraces workers’ democracy not only in theory, but in practice. Any political and organizational decisions are made through a vote in which all dues-paying members can participate. For an initiative to pass, a majority of votes must be cast in favor, with a majority of the local casting their vote. Every other year, we elect a Local Executive Committee (LEC) to handle the most critical responsibilities of the local.
Justin Simons is the current Local Executive Committee Chair of the Peace and Freedom Party of Ventura County, being nominated as acting LEC Chair since January 2013 and formally elected in June 2013. He was re-elected in June 2015, and again in June 2017. Justin has also served as a member of the Local Executive Committee of the Socialist Party of Los Angeles from 2011 to 2013. In addition to his work locally and throughout Southern California, Justin had been elected to serve on the Socialist Party USA National Committee during the 2011 Socialist Party National Convention in Los Angeles, California, and again at the 2013 Socialist Party National Convention in New York City, New York, having served two consecutive terms (2011-2013, 2013-2015).
Holly Carpenter is the current Party Secretary of the Local Executive Committee of the Peace and Freedom Party of Ventura County, having been formally elected in June 2017. Having been involved with the Young People’s Socialist League in 2013, Holly had attended the 2014 Socialist Party National Organizing Conference in Chicago, Illinois. In October 2015, Holly Carpenter was elected to serve on the Socialist Party USA National Committee at the Socialist Party National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She has since been re-elected at the 2017 Socialist Party National Convention in New York City, New York, currently serving a second consecutive term on the National Committee.
Todd Covey first became involved with the Peace and Freedom Party through meetings hosted by the Young People’s Socialist League at Moorpark College in 2013, although he has been a registered member of the Party since 2010. He was elected to serve as Treasurer and Social Media Coordinator for the local in 2017, with the latter position expanded to Communications Director in 2019. He politically identifies as a Marxist-Leninist with a particular interest in combating imperialist narratives on countries demonized by the United States, such as Cuba, Venezuela, and the DPRK (North Korea). He also cannot stop recommending “Blackshirts & Reds” by Michael Parenti to everyone he meets.
